NEOCC Observing Facilities
ESA’s expanding observational network forms the first pillar of its programme for planetary defence. Thanks to a number of telescopes either directly owned, funded or in scientific agreement with ESA, the NEO Coordination Centre is able to perform targeted follow up of imminent or future potential impactors around the world as well as surveys dedicated to NEO discoveries. The list of telescopes the NEOCC operates directly and in cooperation includes:
- ESA’s Test-Bed telescopes, located in Cebreros (Spain) and La Silla (Chile)
- ESA’s Optical Ground Station, located in Tenerife (Spain)
- The Schmidt telescope at the Calar Alto observatory is fully dedicated to NEO observations and directly operated by NEOCC
- ESO’s VLT, where an ESA-ESO agreement for monitoring highly rated, faint impactors is in place
- Dedicated observing time on the Las Cumbres Observatory and 6ROADS telescope networks, including the Zadko telescope in Australia, the HCT in India and the Les Makes telescope in La Reunion
- Moreover, ESA is funding the NEO observational activities carried out by Tautenburg and Klet teams, and storing their data in NEOCC image archive.
